Case Study
Academia Europaea led a scientific review across Europe in partnership with SAPEA (Science Advice for Policy by European Academies). The goal was to bring together the latest thinking from multiple academics on how we can better sustain our planet by using the resources in the ocean – without damaging the ecosystem. The result was a complex 88 page report which was presented to various policy makers across Europe.
Science Made Simple was approached and asked to create an accessible and visual version of the data in a format that could engage non-specialist audiences and families at events. Our team of communicators worked with graphic designers from Design World (https://designworld.co.uk/) to create a simple leaflet that illustrated the key points of the report in bite-size chunks.
As a legacy to the project, these graphics have been used in many public events across Europe to explain the messages from the research community to encourage positive action.

Scientific advisors have never been more in demand. Our consortium of European academies produces scientific evidence reviews to inform policy making within the European Commission. Once a report is published, it is vital for us to convey what the science is saying, so that everyone feels connected and involved in the process of policy development. In the case of Food from the Oceans, we wanted people to think about what they eat and where it comes from. science made simple won a competitive tender to provide us with an infographics-based leaflet that we could use at science festivals, and action campaigns like World Oceans Day. The team at sms not only understood the science but also had amazing creative talent. They were able to distil a comprehensive scientific report into an effective set of images, and easy-to-understand points of information that can be translated into any language. Plus, we had the added bonus of a beautiful colouring sheet that appeals to both adults and children. We’ve used it at physical and virtual events right around the world.
