Your child is taking part at school in STEM Person of the Week Cymru. Fifty primary schools in Wales are participating in 2024-26. This page gives you information about the project and ways you can get involved at home. It also tells you about the project evaluation and how to opt-out if you do not want your child to take part.

The project is designed and delivered by Science Made Simple and nustem (Northumbria University). It is funded by the Science and Technology Facilities Council (UKRI), and is free for all the schools and children joining in.

What is STEM?

STEM is just a quick way to say Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths

About the project

The project includes a fun, interactive show in school, posters and cards with information about STEM role models, and opportunity to join in at home with family.

Your child will learn about some people who work in STEM jobs who have Welsh connections, such as growing up in Wales and going to school there. Children will learn a little about the jobs of each role model, and about what kind of person they are – what they like to do and what personal qualities they have that help them do their jobs.

The project is designed to help children in primary school notice the personal qualities they share with people working in STEM jobs. To learn more about the project, read on here….

About the evaluation
  • Through the project, we hope to help children from a young age see that people working in STEM might be ‘just like me’, with the same qualities and similar backgrounds. We especially hope to help children living in Wales see that people working in STEM careers might be ‘Welsh, just like me‘.

  • Your school is taking part in our evaluation to help us see if we are achieving what we hope. Your child will be asked to complete a simple paper survey at the start and end of the project. This is led by their teacher and children can work together and have help.

  • The surveys do not ask your child for their name or class information. Just age and gender. It is completely anonymous. It’s very simple and fun! You can take a look at the surveys here.

If you are happy for your child to join in with the evaluation, you do not need to do anything!

If you do not want your child to take part in the evaluation of the STEM Person of the Week project, please click on the button at the bottom of the page to complete the opt-out form. Opting out of the evaluation will not effect your child taking part in the project. We will just not include their survey responses in our evaluation.
